Barça named best club in Europe in 2011

FC Barcelona has been crowned as the best club in Europe for the year 2011 by the European Clubs Association (ECA). The ECA met this week in Geneva and today announced their end of season awards. Barcelona received the top honor from the Association which took into account a variety of criteria. While performance on the pitch was important, the ECA also considered good sporting behavior, the club’s business proficiency, and club/ECA member relations.
Other awards were given out as well. After its Europa League performance, Sporting Braga of Portugal was designated the club that made the “best sporting progress in 2011“. FK Baku of Azerbaijan created a school for its players and thus won the “greatest non sporting achievement of 2011” title. Finally, Glasgow Celtic of Scotland achieved the “best community and social responsibility programme of 2011” award after instating a program that allows children with Down Syndrome to play football.
The ECA has 197 member clubs from all 53 UEFA nations.
